What is telogen effluvium?
Telogen effluvium is heavy hair shedding that follows a shock to the body. Many hairs move into the resting phase at the same time. They then fall out together, usually two to three months after the trigger.
Common triggers of telogen effluvium
- Childbirth
- Illness, high fever or surgery
- Severe stress
- Crash diets or sudden weight loss
- Low iron stores or low vitamin D
- Changes in some medicines

Is telogen effluvium permanent?
Usually not. Most cases recover once the trigger is removed.
How long does telogen effluvium last?
Shedding often settles within a few months. Visible regrowth takes longer because hair grows slowly.
Can telogen effluvium cause baldness?
It thins the hair overall but does not usually cause bald patches. Patches point to another cause.
Should I check my iron?
Low iron stores are a common factor in shedding. Ask your doctor for ferritin and related tests.
